Overview:
Stockpiles and ore bins are essential as a buffer between the mine and the process plant or between different parts of the process. Unfortunately, tracking information about material properties from stockpile feed to discharge has been a difficult technical challenge that has implications for process control and geometallurgical optimisation.
We will be presenting our latest developments in ore stockpile modelling and its potential applications in process optimisation and control. The JKMRC is developing a dynamic model of coarse ore stockpiles and ore bins for tracking ore movement and its properties such as grade and particle size. The model considers the feeding of ore, such as from a conveyor or tripper, and the flow of material on the surface of the pile as material tries to maintain an angle of repose, including segregation by size that causes the periphery of the pile to become coarser. Ore can be extracted from several draw points and the rate of draw affects how material works its way through the pile towards the discharge feeders.
In addition to describing how the model works, we will discuss how this capability unlocks potential applications in stockpile management, SAG mill feed optimisation, geometallurgical ore tracking and metal accounting.
