Overview:

Advances in digital technologies and instrumentation have made it possible to measure and monitor a wide range of variables in industrial operations. The mining industry has also benefited from these advances. Thousands of sensors and instruments are installed on mining and mineral processing equipment to measure critical parameters for monitoring and control. However, the quality and validity of those measurements is always an issue which affects the trust in measurement and, consequently, the reliability of any automation that is utilising those data for decision-making.

With advances in mathematical modelling and computational power, particularly edge computing, soft sensors provide the opportunity to fuse direct measurement from instruments with soft sensors’ prediction of the parameters to validate instruments’ measurements and enhance the reliability of automation. Trusted measurement and accurate estimation of parameters are essential for the uptake of advanced control and trust in automated decision-making.

In this talk, the principles of soft sensors and various types of soft sensors are discussed. The development process of the Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre (JKMRC) Mill Filling Inference Tool (JK Mill FIT) and JK Materials Handling Soft Sensor as practical examples will be presented. The talk will demonstrate the value of developing and implementing soft sensors to validate instrument measurements and how those soft sensors can pave the path toward the development of advanced control systems for mineral processing circuits.
