Presenter: Dr Xiaodong Ma

Overview:

The iron and steelmaking industry contributes around 8% to worldwide CO2 emissions, requiring significant decarbonisation to adhere to a 1.5 ℃ pathway. Blast furnace ironmaking will still be dominant in the coming decades; therefore, decarbonisation centred around the optimisation of blast furnace ironmaking is favourable in both practical and economic interests. From a long-term point of view, alternative ironmaking routes replacing carbon with hydrogen, e.g. hydrogen reduction shaft furnace have been identified and crucial to achieve green steels. In this presentation, Xiaodong Ma will introduce his high-temperature processing group at Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre and some research activities on the decarbonisation of ironmaking and steelmaking.

Presenter Bio:

Xiaodong Ma is now the acting group leader of high temperature processing group at Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, Sustainable Minerals Institute. Xiaodong obtained his Bachelor Degree in 2006 and Master Degree in 2009 from Dalian University of Technology in China, and was awarded his PhD in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering in 2012 from The University of Tokyo in Japan. Xiaodong joined The University of Queensland in 2012, right after his PhD graduation, starting as a postdoctoral research fellow, then promoted to research fellow in 2017, and senior research fellow in 2022. Xiaodong is a pyrometallurgical specialist with a strong interest lying in lower CO2 emission technologies and hydrogen metallurgy in the metallurgical sector.
